31 Life Lessons for Manuel on his 20th Birthday



  1. Think big, aim high, start at the bottom.

  2. If it doesn’t make you happy, you’re on the wrong train.

  3. Always have a wingman.

  4. Achieve upper body strength.

  5. Hold the line. Love isn’t always on time.

  6. Find your talent.

  7. Manliness is never hindered when you need to give your car keys to somebody else.

  8. There will always be a velvet rope by a door. Those who really want to get in are the ones who do. But don’t just stand in line waiting to be picked. Go out and be noticed.

  9. Dress for the occasion. Matching your socks with your belt is essential but do wear outrageous underwear underneath; it builds up the attitude.

  10. Don’t send text messages if you’ve had a few drinks. It will hit you in the morning that it wasn’t a good idea.

  11. Tip good service. They’ll rememeber you when you come back.

  12. If you’re going to question authority make sure you have the humility to get your facts straight first.

  13. Don’t marry for the party. Marry for the fights. They are the ones that make happy occasions more memorable.

  14. Own a good razor.

  15. You can always trust a dishonest man to be dishonest. It’s the honest ones you have to look out for.

  16. The worst word in the English language is “excuse”. No one likes to hear excuses, so take responsibility.

  17. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a stroke of luck.

  18. Don’t criticize other people’s musical tastes.

  19. Ice, duct tape and club soda will solve 90% of all problems

  20. Develop a massive vocabulary.

  21. Love the chase; you’ll be doing it your whole life.

  22. Neither the diploma nor the major define who you are. It’s what you make of them that do.

  23. Have strong opinions but concede that others have them too.

  24. Release your fear of losing. Embrace your fear of not winning.

  25. When in doubt about a wine list, always go for the Chilean wines.

  26. Be nice to the ladies.

  27. Call on birthdays. It’s a pain in the ass but you might just be the only person who did.

  28. When at a funeral, embrace the person and say “I’m sorry”. There’s no other way of dealing with his grief.

  29. Don’t be afraid to negotiate your salary. They always offer a smaller sum in the beginning.

  30. You’re not the best. You’ll never be but don’t let that stop you. Get up and win the race.

  31. Find your soulmate.
